Meet the Faces of Crypto Philanthropy (2023)

by | Nov 28, 2023

Donating crypto to charity is becoming more popular each year. Crypto users are incentivized to give because of factors such as the tax benefits, the growing number of charities accepting crypto, and the ease of donating it.

The value of cryptocurrency donations has exceeded $2 Billion over the past few years. But the total donated is only a portion of the way that crypto has made an impact on social causes.

Crypto’s charitable impact is made possible by a vibrant community that includes donors, fundraisers, blockchain companies, NFT creators, and forward-thinking nonprofits.

The list below, by no means complete, introduces some of the people who have helped shape the crypto philanthropy movement.

Pine - Faces of Crypto Philanthropy

Pine

Philanthropist, The Pineapple Fund

In 2017, anonymous bitcoiner “Pine” launched The Pineapple Fund, donating bitcoin totaling about $55 Million in value to 60 charities. For many fundraisers, Pineapple Fund grants were some of their earliest exposure to crypto. This act of radical generosity put crypto philanthropy on the radar of crypto users and the charitable sector alike.

“My aims, goals, and motivations in life have nothing to do with [. . .] being [. . .] mega rich. So I’m doing something else: donating the majority of my bitcoins to charitable causes.”
